Natural colours for potato chips can be applied to the seasoning, the potato, or both. The emergence of regional and ethnic differences continues to accelerate category innovation.

Consumers seek visually-appealing, low-salt potato snacks that fit the “better for you” product segment. DDW offers a wide range of shelf stable, natural colourings that fit nearly every solubility, pH or processing need in potatoes (see Processed potatoes). To achieve even colour distribution within the chip (crisp), try adding DDW’s heat-stable, custom colouring prior to frying or baking.

Natural Colors for Chips

A snack seasoning may contain powdered annatto to suggest cheese flavor. A barbecue or hot sauce seasoning may contain a blend of powdered paprika and caramel colour. DDW produces a dozen different types of powdered caramel colours with surface shades ranging from yellow-brown to reddish-brown to nearly black. These are an excellent choice for snack seasonings and can be dry blended with other natural colourings to achieve the desired hue. Non-GM versions are available.
